It’s like rain on your beach wedding day

  • Posted By cheryl
  • on September 21,2020

The dream was for a tropical wedding ceremony on a white sandy beach, followed by a balmy reception under the stars. Glammed up guests could dine and dance barefoot beneath the fairy lights. Sounds ideallyic, doesn’t it? And you would think in Queensland, that a beach wedding would be a year-round possibility.

However, on the wedding eve, with bad weather predicted, the groom gathered together his crew to assemble a sturdy marquee as a contingency plan. They kitted out a smaller marquee for the caterers, and hooked up a generator to power the lights and stoves. Plans for a night out sinking a few cold ones were put to the side as the trusty band of volunteers worked late into the night stabilising the setup. Groom, Adam, decided to forgo a comfy bed and sleep out at the site overnight to guard the paraphernalia, and was kept company by his groomsmen.

The next morning, they awoke to stormy skies, and the prediction of a downpour. I met up with bride, Lin, as she was having her hair styled in an apartment overlooking the ocean. Lin was pragmatic, and although disappointed that her wedding dreams had been dashed, she kept her eyes on the prize and focussed on marrying the man she planned to spend her life beside.

As per the forecast, rain dropped from the skies right on ceremony start time, so we huddled under the tarpaulins and listened to the newlyweds promise each other a lifetime of devotion. Luckily, the electrical equipment had been carefully protected from the elements, and the aroma of tasty treats soon wafted in from the kitchen marquee. I quickly learned the art of a well-placed umbrella prod to the roof of the sagging marquee to toss off the pooling rainfall.

Once the guests were seated around trestle tables, and had eaten their fill, I opened the floor for the reception speeches. Bride, Groom, and family members spoke their genuine appreciation of all who had come together to create such a magical day. But the unexpected speaker of the night was a guest who had travelled from interstate to celebrate with the couple, who he had met while they were both travelling the country. This guest knew no other at the wedding, however, had been one of the willing construction helpers the previous day. While he was enjoying the wedding feast and party, that was not the highlight of the weekend. Instead, he told of the immense satisfaction and feeling of community that he enjoyed through contributing to the task of setting up the wedding site. Despite the inclement weather, despite the disappointment of dreams down the drain, despite the lack of expertise and implements of the random bunch, being a part of a team who all worked towards a common and benevolent goal was gratifying and rewarding beyond any traditional wedding guest experience.

And then the rain cleared, the DJ spun some tunes, and the guests still danced barefoot in the sand beneath the fairy lights.

Wedding at Midginbil Hill

  • Posted By cheryl

After stocking up on jellybeans and setting up the tunes, we headed down the coast early on Friday afternoon to miss the weekender traffic. Upon turning off the freeway at Tweed Heads, the countryside was lush and green after recent rain. We followed the Tweed River inland, passing cane fields and fat dairy cows. Taking into consideration that NSW has daylight savings time, the rehearsal for Amie and Ross was at 5pm. Underneath the huge old fig tree, we made plans for the ceremony layout. Shade was plentiful, and offered shelter for both the bridal party and the wedding guests. We parted ways on Friday afternoon, and I found some accommodation at nearby Murwillumbah.

Guests of Amie and Ross all stayed at Midginbil Hill, where there is a variety of accommodation options. Buffet dinner was served to the guests after they arrived from all over Queensland and NSW. https://www.midginbilhill.com.au/

On Saturday morning, there was time for me to take a trip out to Coolangatta Beach, where the water was clear and calm. If I’d had a net and the inclination, I could have scooped up dozens of fish who were gliding through the waves in the shallows. After a quick lunch, I curled my hair and put on heels and a frock for the drive back out to Midginbil.

A fleet of 4WD vehicles ferried the guests up the hill to the ceremony location. Ross and his groomsmen looked hot in their suits, but found a slight breeze under the shady tree. Amie and her bridesmaids turned up in an old Holden, and walked down the aisle to a Boo Seeka song.

As celebrant, I told the story of Ross and Amie’s first date, where Ross gave Amie his jacket to keep her warm on a cold, winter’s eve. Amie and Ross are both creative people, and took some time to craft the vows they made to each other. They signed their certificates to “You’re my Best Friend,” by Queen.

The newlyweds walked back down the aisle to The Killers cover of Romeo and Juliet, and were congratulated by family and friends.

Photographer, Andrew, from Foy & Co ensured the bridal party were cued for beautiful photos as the sun dipped atop the spectacular mountain. https://foyandco.com.au/photography/

Guests were then transported back down the hill for an evening of feasting and celebrating in the rustic barn at Midginbil Hill. And I headed back home to have a well deserved glass of bubbles.

If you’re looking for a DIY option for a country wedding with majestic views, Midginbil Hill is worth taking a look at.

Brisbane Wedding at Lightspace, Fortitude Valley

Zita and David were looking for a contemporary space for their wedding ceremony and reception, and found this blank canvas in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Previously a smash repair workshop, the industrial past of the building is evident in the painted blockwork walls and polished concrete floors.

The couple chose Lillicreek Florals to transform the space with beauty, colour, and fragrance. The hanging arbour was the backdrop for the ceremony. https://lillicreekflorals.com.au/

As the celebrant, I told the story of David and Zita’s meeting and subsequent romance. We had a few emails back and forth until the tale was just right. https://cherylwedding.com/

Photographer, Julian Beattie captured moments from the ceremony, including the couple’s first kiss as newlyweds. http://julianbeattie.com/

Zita looked absolutely stunning with an elegant bun at the nape of her neck, and a v-neck figure hugging dress. David was dapper in a suit.

Despite the warm day outside, guests were cool in the air conditioning of the venue, and were served appetising canapes after the ceremony.

Brisbane wedding at New Farm

.

For your summer wedding, a venue with shady trees and breeze from the river ensures the guests are cool and comfortable. Events on Oxlade ticks both these boxes, and was the location of Lana and Mehdi’s gorgeous January wedding.

The groom and groomsmen wore blue jackets, and the bridesmaids were dressed in pale blue. Luckily, skies were blue, too, which meant that the Brisbane River was looking her finest.

Bride, Lana, was radiating happiness as she exchanged vows with her handsome groom. She held a bouquet of sunflowers, reflecting the location of the marriage proposal – a field of sunflowers.

Nearby New Farm Park provided plenty of photographic opportunities which photographer, Romana Saeheng, used to her advantage. The photos turned out beautifully.

As the sun set, the guests enjoyed music, conversation, cool drinks and canapes under the festive lights.

Brisbane Wedding at Sirromet Winery Mount Cotton

Nikki and Matt were married at Sirromet Winery, Mount Cotton. The arbour at Sirromet winery has been freshly painted white, and was decorated with pink and white roses by local florist Capalaba Carnations.

Nikki’s bridesmaids wore soft pink dresses in various styles. Matt’s groomsmen wore navy waistcoats and trousers, choosing to keep cooler on a summer’s afternoon. Family and friends cheered them on as they walked into the ceremony area to the song “Stand by Me”. Celebrant Cheryl Landsberry told the story of Nikki and Matt’s first meeting, their first date, and Matt’s proposal in Grundewald, Switzerland on Christmas morning. The ceremony was magical, and guests were delighted to hear Matt tell how easy it is for him to be so in love with Nikki, and hear Nikki tell how she loves Matt more than Disney and Harry Potter. They placed their written vows into a special timber box containing a bottle of wine from Sirromet Wines – to be opened on the birth of their first child.

Guests tossed rose petals as Matt and Nikki walked back down the aisle into their married life together – and don’t the look ecstatic?!

Brisbane Wedding at Cherbon Waters, Burbank,

Judi and Bob are childhood sweethearts. They wanted a relaxed and enjoyable wedding ceremony, and a celebration with family and friends afterwards. Redlands celebrant, Cheryl Landsberry, wrote a sweet ceremony which told the couple’s story.

Bob and Judi chose Cherbon Waters at Burbank for their wedding, as the property caters for both ceremony and reception at the one location. Cherbon Waters is located on the banks of the Leslie Harrison Dam.

Judi was escorted down the aisle by her proud dad, Alberto. Judi wore the dress which was worn by her late mother to her own wedding day. How special is that? Alberto also sung a cappella during the signing of the certificates.

Bob and Judi also incorporated a handfasting into their ceremony, using this black cord. The cord will be kept as a keepsake of their wedding ceremony.

They didn’t need it on this beautiful spring day, but the arbour at Cherbon Waters provides shelter in the event of rainy weather. Bob and Judi left the ceremony area, arm in arm, delighted to be finally married.

Guests enjoyed canapes and drinks on the lawn as the bridal party had some formal photos taken. Redlands photographer, Romana Saeheng, made quick work of the essential photos, as the bridal party were eager to join their guests and celebrate with them.

If  you are looking for a Brisbane wedding venue, take a look at Cherbon Waters at Burbank.

Jordie and Daniel’s picture perfect wedding at Rainforest Gardens, Mount Cotton was captured by the team at Everlast Studios Photography. Marriage Celebrant Cheryl Landsberry told the sweet story of how the couple met. Jordan’s five bridesmaids wore pastel apricot, and the five groomsmen wore navy suits.

Jordan looked beautiful in a strapless white gown, with her blonde hair curled. She wore green gemstone earrings which sparkled as she laughed.

Daniel was dapper in a navy suit and charming grin.

The Rainforest Gardens has a timber ceremony deck in front of the pond. Lush palms tower over the area, providing shade and a sense of tranquility.
